Au cours du violent conflit qui opposa les États-Unis au Mexique, une sanglante méprise fit un héros du capitaine John Boyd, homme pusillanime et lâche. Son supérieur hiérarchique n'est pas dupe et l'envoie aux confins enneigés et sauvages du pays, dans une compagnie constituée de singuliers personnages: le commandant Hart, le docteur Knox, Cleaves, le cuistot et Georges, un éclaireur indien. John Boyd est entraîné dans une enquête par l'étrange Colqhoun, qui déclare que ses compagnons de voyage ont été victimes d'un militaire cannibale rendu fou par le froid et la faim.
