1870. Après dix années passées en pension, Fanny Hopwood revient au domicile familial, à Londres. Aussitôt, les drames s'enchaînent. Son père est tué par l'abject Lord Manderstoke lors d'une altercation. À cette occasion, la jeune fille découvre que l'homme qu'elle prenait pour son père l'a adoptée. Elle est en fait la fille illégitime de Clive Seymore, un député très respecté. La mère de Fanny décède peu de temps après, laissant à sa fille la gestion de ses affaires. À sa grande surprise, celle-ci découvre que ses parents tiraient leurs confortables revenus d'une maison close. Seule et isolée, Fanny est embauchée comme domestique par son père biologique...
