Dans le Sud profond, deux familles se vouent une haine implacable. Les Feather, autour de son patriarche Laban, détestent les Gutshall, soudés derrière le vieux Pap, sans que personne ne sache pourquoi. L'animosité, longtemps limitée à de tristes blagues, monte d'un cran quand les fils Feather décident d'enlever une fille de la bande rivale.
