Lorsque Nick tombe amoureux de Suzanne, une mère célibataire, il n'a pas à se soucier de ce que les enfants pensent de lui, car Suzanne ne veut qu'une «relation amicale». Aucunement refroidi par cette déclaration, Nick demeure patient. Le jour où Suzanne a besoin de quelqu'un pour ramener ses enfants à Vancouver pour le Nouvel An, Nick saute avec joie sur l'occasion.
