À l’été 1963, François Mitterrand traverse une profonde crise existentielle. Sa carrière politique est à l’arrêt et, après 19 années de mariage, son couple s’est distendu. C’est à ce moment-là que François Mitterrand rencontre celle qui va redonner un sens à son existence. Anne Pingeot, 19 ans, va devenir la compagne d’une vie, elle qui sera présente tout au long de son ascension vers le pouvoir et qui restera à ses côtés jusqu’à son dernier souffle. Pour la première fois, Anne Pingeot a accepté que les fragments de cette passion amoureuse – des centaines de lettres et un journal intime – soient présentés à la télévision, avant d’être remis à la Bibliothèque nationale.
