Longtemps, Bernadette Chirac est restée dans l'ombre de son mari, Jacques. En 1995, celle qui est surnommée « la tortue » est évincée de la photo d'investiture du président de la République. Son fameux sac à main et son image poussiéreuse sont tournés en ridicule par « Les Guignols de l'info ». Grâce au succès fulgurant de l'opération « Pièces jaunes », à un relooking et des confidences savamment distillées dans un livre confession qui deviendra un best-seller, Bernadette Chirac va occuper le devant de la scène et passer du statut d'épouse effacée à celui de femme politique appréciée des Français.
