New York en 2022. Un brouillard a envahi la surface du globe, tuant la végétation et la plupart des espèces animales. D'un côté, les nantis qui peuvent avoir accès à la nourriture rare et très chère. De l'autre, les affamés nourris d'une nouvelle forme d'aliment, le « Soleil Vert », un produit synthétique rationné par le gouvernement et distribué par l'entreprise Soylent qui gère la distribution alimentaire. A la suite du meurtre d'un dirigeant de l'entreprise Soylent , Thorn (Charlton Heston), un flic opiniâtre, est chargé de l'enquête et va découvrir que cette affaire, rapidement étiquetée comme étant un crime crapuleux, se révèle être en fait un assassinat visant à empêcher de révéler un terrible secret...
