Lors de la 20ème réunion des survivants de la catastrophe de l'U.S.S. Indianapolis, le capitaine McVay et son équipage se remémorent ce qu'ils ont vécu durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Tout commence en juillet 1945. Le croiseur U.S.S. Indianapolis fait route vers l'île de Guam, au large des Philippines. Le capitaine Charles McVay, qui commande les opérations, doit livrer la bombe qui sera larguée sur Hiroshima. Cette mission accomplie, le croiseur regagne sa base lorsqu'il est repéré par un sous-marin japonais qui le torpille...
