Âgé de quatorze ans, Otto adresse une lettre de suicide à sa famille et à ses camarades de classe, mais rate sa tentative. Trop honteux pour rentrer chez lui, il se cache. La nuit tombée, il hante les rues de la ville, comme un fantôme, jusqu'à ce qu'une fille de son lycée, Léna, dont le rôle a été confié à Jane Beever, le reconnaisse.
