Jessica Stein est journaliste à New York et elle a tout pour plaire. Elle est belle, sensible et intelligente. Mais le célibat lui pèse.Son frère vient de se fiancer, sa meilleure amie est enceinte, alors qu'elle-même n'a pas eu d'histoire d'amour depuis un an. Jessica décide alors de prendre son destin en main.Après une série de rendez-vous cauchemardesques, Jessica tombe sur une petite annonce qui éveille sa curiosité. Bien que celle-ci figure dans la section "Femmes cherchent femmes", elle décide d'y répondre. C'est ainsi qu'elle rencontre, dans un bar, la séduisante Helen Cooper.A sa grande surprise, le courant passe instantanément entre elles et la soirée, chaleureuse et animée, se conclut sur un baiser qui trouble au plus haut point Jessica.
