À la fin du XIXème siècle en Angleterre. Henry Horatio Hobson est un prospère cordonnier à Salford dans le Lancashire. Il est veuf, et sa maison et son commerce sont tenus par ses trois filles. Hobson est aussi avare que buveur. Si ses filles sont les commerciales de son commerce, Willie Mossop en est l'artisan qui travaille sans relâche, dans la cave de la boutique. Il est un Napoléon de la chaussure mais ignore son talent, exploité par Hobson. Hobson permet à ses deux plus jeunes filles, Alice et Vicky de faire d'enrichissants mariages, mais a décidé que l'aînée, Maggie, restera à la maison pour s'occuper de lui. Elle lui est trop utile pour être perdue. Or Maggie, habile et intelligente, a d'autres idées en tête, et elle compte bien mener sa vie vers la prospérité sociale et financière...
