Mexique, 1864. Le pays est divisé par la lutte contre l'occupation française et l'empereur Maximilien. Le médecin allemand Karl Sternau et son ami Andreas Hasenpfeffer viennent à l'amour du pays et de soutenir la cause des Mexicains fiers.
