Marty et Aaron sont de jeunes pionniers partis à la conquête de l'ouest américain. Au terme d'un voyage éprouvant de presque un an, le couple atteint enfin la terre promise. Mais tous les espoirs de bonheur de Marty sont brutalement anéantis lorsqu'Aaron meurt d'une chute de cheval. La jeune femme rencontre Clark, un fermier veuf, qui lui propose de l'épouser et de subvenir à ses besoins. En échange, Marty devra s'occuper de Missie, la fille de Clark...
