Dans un futur proche, l'eau est devenue rare, suscitant convoitise et violence. Dans ce climat hostile, Ernest Holm veille sur sa ferme, son fils Jerome et sa fille Mary, et nourrit l'espoir de rendre ses terres à nouveau fertiles. Tout comme Flem Lever, qui fréquente Mary en secret et n'a qu'une idée en tête : s’emparer des terres d'Ernest quel qu’en soit le prix.
