Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les États-Unis ont installé des bases militaires en Grande-Bretagne dans le cadre de l'effort de guerre. Contre leur propre sensibilité, de nombreux Britanniques n'aiment pas beaucoup les Yanks impétueux, surtout en ce qui concerne les IG qui font des progrès sur les filles britanniques seules. Une relation qui se développe est entre John marié, un capitaine de l'armée, et l'aristocratique Helen, dont le mari de la marine est en guerre. Helen aime son mari, mais Helen et John recherchent un certain réconfort pendant les moments difficiles.
