Le choix du désespoir (1996)
Jody s'est vu retirer la garde de sa fille au profit de son ex-mari, malgré les lourdes présomptions de violences sexuelles qui pèsent sur lui. Elle est confrontée à un choix douloureux : soit la laisser entre ses mains, soit prendre la fuite avec elle, au risque d'être accusée de kidnapping. Jody décide de s'enfuir. Poursuivies à la fois par le FBI et par un détective privé engagé par son ex-mari, la mère et sa fille entament une longue cavale à travers les Etats-Unis. Changeant d'apparence et d'identité, elles parviennent à mettre leurs poursuivants en échec. Quatre ans plus tard, Jody s'est remariée et a donné naissance à une seconde fille. L'avenir semble serein, mais un jour, la jeune femme se fait voler sa carte de crédit.
