Pour être plus près d'un adolescent sourd-muet comme lui et interné dans un hôpital psychiatrique, John Singer s'installe chez des gens modestes. Là il devra faire la conquête de la fille de la maison, Mick, isolée elle aussi dans son milieu. Il réussira mais la solitude sera la plus forte.
