A la fin du XIXe siècle, Rose Ross, une jeune Écossaise, est obligée de fuir en Amérique avec son père après que ce dernier, au cours d'une dispute, a tué lord Cavendish, un personnage influent. Jay Cavendish, le neveu du lord, un tout jeune homme amoureux de Rose depuis toujours, décide de partir pour la retrouver dans l'Ouest américain. Il découvre alors un monde beaucoup plus dangereux qu'il ne l'avait imaginé. Il est sauvé de la mort par un mystérieux voyageur, Silas Selleck, qui le prend sous son aile. Quand Silas apprend à l'insu de Jay que la tête du père de Rose est mise à prix, il est tenté par l'affaire
