Après avoir provoqué un accident en conduisant ivre, Sandy Cooper profite de sa liberté conditionnelle pour prendre un nouveau départ. Elle s'installe dans la ville où habite son amie d'enfance et grâce à elle, elle trouve du travail dans son cabinet d'avocat. Peu après, elle rencontre un homme charmant qui se fait appeler Sam et entame une liaison avec lui, jusqu'à ce qu'elle découvre qu'il est, en fait, le mari de sa meilleure amie. Sandy se rend compte que cet homme mène un double jeu permanent et le soupçonne d'être responsable de la mort d'une jeune fille quelques mois auparavant.
