Lou Ricarno est un gangster raffiné dont la tâche consiste à faire en sorte que les truands ne s’entretuent pas. Très bon dans son activité, il choisit néanmoins de se retirer en Floride en compagnie de sa ravissante femme, pour y écrire sa biographie et profiter de la vie. Mais son passé frappe rapidement à sa porte…
