Fin du XVIIIe siècle, en Italie, dans la maison de Mansion de Don Magnifico, la jeune et jolie Angelina est de femme de chambre. Raillée par ses deux futiles demi-sœurs, Clorinda et Tisby, Angelina crois aimer un jeune valet et se rend au bal. Parée de ses plus beaux atours, elle y retrouve celui qui est en fait le Prince et le fuit après lui avoir remis un bracelet qui lui permettra de la reconnaître un peu plus tard. Les masques tombent, la bonté et l’amour triomphent ! « La cenerentola » est le dernier opéra bouffe composé par Gioachino Rossini pour le public italien. Dramma giocoso en deux actes, au livret de Jacopo Ferretti, librement adapté du conte « Cendrillon » (1697) de Charles Perraul en supprimant la magie au profit d’un réalisme teinté d’humour et de critique sociale. Créé pour le Carnaval de Rome au Teatro Valle de Rome, le 28 janvier 1817. Enregistré en direct à l'Opéra de Glyndebourne, à Lewes, dans l'East Sussex, les 2 et 4 juin 2005.
