À la suite d’un phénomène inexpliqué, une créature de feu, née des éruptions solaires, est projetée sur Terre. Sa capacité de destruction est infinie, et elle semble douée d’intelligence. Incendies, explosions et morts violentes se multiplient. Bientôt, la planète entière sera une gigantesque fournaise. Cooke, un religieux illuminé, y voit la réalisation d’anciennes prédictions, et décide d’utiliser la créature pour asseoir son propre pouvoir. De leur côté, le pompier Jake Relm et son ami Billie tentent de comprendre l’origine du phénomène afin de pouvoir éviter l’ultime catastrophe : la fin de toute vie terrestre…
