Johnny, un fringant quinquagénaire, sort de prison. Une tentative d'escroquerie lui a valu quelques mois de détention. Entre-temps, sa femme l'a quitté. Cuisinier de son état et optimiste de caractère, il se présente dans un restaurant grec de New York, l'Apollo. L'ambiance y est chaleureuse, et Johnny s'y fait embaucher sans trop de problèmes. Il y découvre une perle rare, ignorée de tous, la touchante Frankie, que de trop nombreuses déceptions sentimentales ont dégoûtée de l'amour. Après avoir passé une soirée mouvementée avec Cora, Johnny tente de séduire sa collègue esseulée, dont il est éperdument amoureux. Celle-ci le repousse farouchement...
