Marc Chabot, un psychanalyste réputé, soigne Daisy Gamble qui souffre d'une addiction au tabac. Au cours d'une séance d'hypnose, Daisy évoque des faits concernant une certaine Melinda Tentrees, qui vivait au XIXe siècle. Chabot pense que les souvenirs de Daisy proviennent d'une vie antérieure. Plus son analyse avance, plus il tombe amoureux de Daisy lorsqu'elle relate la vie de Melinda. Le personnage de Daisy au quotidien, vulgaire et agaçante, le laisse en revanche froid. Lorsqu'elle apprend l'expérience dont elle a été l'objet, sa patiente part en claquant la porte. Chabot est prêt à tout pour la revoir...
