Frank, 55 ans, grand travailleur et homme respecté dans sa communauté, se retrouve brutalement sans emploi. Pour la première fois de sa vie, il se sent perdu et sans repères. Un jour, son ami Danny lui dit en plaisantant qu'il devrait traverser la Manche à la nage par une belle journée. L'idée fait son chemin dans la tête de Frank et, à l'insu de sa femme Joan, il décide de redonner un but à sa vie en se préparant pour ce test d'endurance suprême : traverser la Manche à la nage...
