En 1955, peu après la naissance de leur seul enfant, un couple de savants atomistes meurt dans des circonstances aussi inhabituelles que cruelles. Quarante ans plus tard, leur fils, Daivd Bell, souffre de la métamorphose de son organisme sous influence de radiations inscrites dans ses gênes. Plus grave encore : partout où il passe, des gens se consument dans des gerbes de flammes sans aucune explication...
