A Hunter's Point, dans l'Etat de New York, l'enlèvement de trois femmes, signé d'une rose noire, fait la une des journaux. Quelque temps plus tard, l'épouse du promoteur Peter Lake est retrouvée assassinée. Un délinquant sexuel est arrêté et Peter Lake ne fait plus parler de lui. Dix ans plus tard, à Sacramento, en Californie, trois personnes disparaissent sans laisser de traces, selon le même scénario. Pendant ce temps, Martin Darius, un riche promoteur victime de chantage, s'assure les services de Betsy Tannenbaum, une avocate. De son côté, Nancy Gordon, ancien lieutenant de police de New York à l'époque des meurtres, renseigne le procureur Alan Page, chargé de l'affaire, et accuse Martin Darius...
