Le jeune Abraham Lincoln déjà engagé en politique, ambitionne de faire du droit. Il compulse les livres et s'installe quelques années plus tard à Springfield pour exercer en tant qu'avocat. Il végète dans le cabinet d'un confrère plus expérimenté, où s'égrènent les affaires de voisinage. Lors de la fête de l'indépendance, une dispute éclate qui se conclut par un assassinat. Lincoln s'emploie spontanément à la défense des deux présumés meurtriers.
