A travers le quotidien tragi-comique d'une famille anglaise, Cyril, Shirley, Valerie et Mrs Bender, la mere de Cyril et Valerie, un essai presque optimiste sur la communication. "Au fond de tout cela, declare Mike Leigh, il y a le fait que j'ai toujours été tres engage, dans ma volonté de faire des films et des pieces sur la vie reelle, les problèmes reels, les questions reelles et les rapports humains reels." Prix de la critique internationale au festival de Venise en 1988.
