Rhonda partage son temps entre la petite épicerie où elle travaille et sa maison où l'attendent ses jumelles de cinq ans, Sarah et Julie, qu'elle élève seule depuis le départ de son mari. Les fillettes l'entendent soupirer à haute voix après quelques jours de repos et décident, gentiment, de se rendre de leur propre chef chez leur grand-mère, qui habite à trois cents kilomètres de là. Elles se glissent à l'arrière du camion que conduit Eddie, l'un des prétendants de leur mère. Celui-ci a tôt fait de les découvrir, mais à peine a-t-il pu rassurer Rhonda qu'il est assommé par deux petits malfrats qui décident de garder les fillettes en otages...
