Six mois après la mort de son dernier mari, Ruby Asher cherche déjà à le remplacer, aidée par sa fille, Amanda, âgée de 23 ans. Elle jette son dévolu sur Nicholas Landon, un riche politicien local. Malgré les réticences de sa fille, Teresa, Nicholas tombe amoureux de Ruby et l'épouse. Il finit par trouver lui aussi la mort peu de temps après... Teresa est certaine que Ruby est responsable de sa disparition et qu'elle se débarrasse ainsi de chacun de ses maris. Alors que Ruby tente de séduire un nouvel homme, Teresa jure de la faire traduire en justice
