Tampa, en Floride. Sharon Ferris, une jeune divorcée, vient d'accepter une promotion qui doit la conduire à New York. Sa fille, Nikki, onze ans, s'y oppose férocement, ne voulant pas quitter sa meilleure amie, Mary Grand, dont le père, Bill, est chroniqueur sportif au 'Tampa Tribune" et... veuf. Les deux fillettes cherchent un moyen de ne pas être séparées et elles se convainquent rapidement que, si leurs parents s'épousaient, tous leurs problèmes seraient résolus. Encore faut-il que Sharon et Bill se rencontrent et s'aiment. Mais les deux gamines sont pleines de ressources et ont un atout majeur : Susan, la sœur jumelle de Sharon, toute prête à les aider dans leur entreprise...
