À la fin des années 70, le disco, jugé trop banal et trop grand public, était mort. Mais les DJ et les pistes de danse ont toujours besoin de nouveaux disques et de rythmes plus rapides. Construit sur des sons de synthétiseurs, le style hi-nrg (haute énergie) a balayé les clubs gays avant d'atteindre les charts dans les années 80.
