La docteure Lizzie Beauman est une mère divorcée. Directrice d'un hôpital, elle est déterminée à obtenir les meilleurs résultats pour son établissement, tout en s'occupant de sa petite fille âgée de 5 ans, Quinn. Elle a toujours pris grand soin de séparer sa vie professionnelle et sa vie privée, mais ses certitudes sont chamboulées lorsqu'elle recrute Charley au poste de pilote d'hélicoptère de l'hôpital. Charley est le fils de Walter, un homme veuf qui s'est tout récemment lié d'amitié avec Quinn et Lizzie. Alors qu'il se désolait de voir son père se renfermer, Charley se réjouit de l'irruption de la petite fille dans sa vie.
