Une jeune femme prodigue les derniers soins au corps sans vie de sa mère. À ses côtés, une veille femme, une babouhcka, comme on dit chez les Russes. La jeune à tâtons, la veille d’une main sûre, lavent ce corps, l’apprêtent. Elles l’accompagnent, le bercent et se consolent par ce dernier au revoir.
