Des essais nucléaires dans le Pacifique provoquent de nombreux boulversements écologiques, séïsmes, éruptions volcaniques,... La fin de monde est proche. Des scientifiques annoncent que la seule solution pour tenter d'éviter la catastrophe est de faire exploser une bombe thermonucléaire à Los Angeles. Le Colonel Beckett est alors chargé de placer la bombe en plein coeur de Los Angeles évacué d'urgence.
