Ruth et Eileen, deux soeurs de l'Ohio viennent s'installer à New York pour démarrer une carrière de journaliste pour la première et d'actrice pour l'autre. Il faut d'abord trouver un logement, et leur budget ne leur laisse que peu de choix; ce sera un basement à Greenwich village, avec ses voisins envahissants, son propriétaire véreux mais peintre à ses heures, et les travaux du métro...
