Le 1er septembre 2016, alors que les joueurs et les spectateurs du stade de San Diego se lèvent pendant l'hymne national, la star du football américain Colin Kaepernick pose un genou à terre. Ce geste de protestation contre les violences policières et les injustices à l'encontre des Afro-Américains suffit pour le propulser sur le devant de la scène médiatique. Le pays bascule dans un débat sur les discriminations raciales, ne laissant personne indifférent, pas même Donald Trump, qui critique vertement le sportif lors de ses discours de campagne.
