Après la parution des « Les Versets sataniques », en 1988, l'écrivain indo-britannique Salman Rushdie a vécu plus de dix ans traqué, reclus et sous protection policière. L'ayatollah Khomeyni, le guide de la jeune révolution islamique iranienne, l'a condamné à mort dans une fatwa pour ce roman décrété blasphématoire.
