Marian Anderson, première Afro-Américaine à avoir chanté au Metropolitan Opera, grandit à Philadelphie au début du XXe siècle, avant de conquérir l'Europe et l'Amérique grâce à son talent exceptionnel. Elle fit autant pour l'opéra que pour la communauté noire, dont elle porta les combats. "Une voix comme la sienne émerge seulement tous les cent ans", disait d'elle Arturo Toscanini.
