Maggie Turner est une brillante avocate chez Luckman, Reed et Baxter, un cabinet prestigieux de Chicago où elle va même peut-être être promue collaboratrice associée. Mariée depuis quinze ans à Josh, un professeur d’histoire, elle a sentiment qu’elle le déçoit et et qu’il ne supporte plus de devoir faire des efforts pour la soutenir. Des tensions se font sentir. Alors qu’ils sont en route pour aller chez les parents de Maggie qui fêtent leurs quarante ans de mariage, Maggie se demande si leur couple n’est pas contruit sur de mauvaises bases.
