Ce documentaire retrace la biographie surprenante de l'artiste légendaire Maya Deren. Née à Kiev en 1917, elle devint un personnage central de l'avant-garde américaine après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Surtout connue pour son travail anticonformiste dans le film expérimental, elle était très active dans d'autres domaines politiques et culturels : elle fut poète, danseuse, et par-dessus tout une ethnographe renommée et une adepte des pratiques vaudou.
