Le soir de son anniversaire, Alana Westbrook, une puissante femme d'affaires, redoutée dans le milieu de la cosmétologie, est assassinée. Les soupçons se portent immédiatement sur Arthur, son mari, maintes fois trompé, qui venait de lui découvrir un nouvel amant. Perry Mason s'intéresse cependant à une autre piste. Peu de temps avant sa mort, Alana, reine des cosmétiques, avait en effet annoncé publiquement qu'elle avait 62 ans et non 30 comme tout le laissait supposer. Son secret : une crème anti-vieillissement révolutionnaire que bon nombre de ses «amis» et associés convoitaient et qui pourrait bien constituer un mobile pour l'assassin...
