Né le 18 septembre 1973 à Stillwater, Oklahoma, James Marsden est un acteur américain d'origines anglaise, allemande et écossaise. Après des études de journalisme à l'Oklahoma State University, il abandonne ses cours en 1993 pour s'installer à Los Angeles et enchaîne les petits rôles télévisés avant de décrocher ses premiers films. C'est la saga X-Men (2000-2014) qui le révèle au grand public, dans le rôle du mutant Scott Summers alias Cyclope. Il confirme ensuite sa polyvalence avec des comédies musicales comme Hairspray (2007), des romances telles que 27 Robes (2008) ou Il Était une Fois (2007), et des thrillers comme The Box (2009). Il démontre aussi ses talents de chanteur à plusieurs reprises à l'écran. À la télévision, il marque les années 2010 avec Westworld (2016-2022) puis Dead to Me (2019-2022), avant de créer la surprise dans la mockumentaire Jury Duty (2023), version fictive de lui-même qui lui vaut des nominations aux Golden Globes et aux Emmy Awards. Il enchaîne avec la série Paradise (2025), pour laquelle il remporte l'Emmy Award du meilleur acteur dans un second rôle dramatique.
