Nanaura, Chiba, Japan:
Sessue Hayakawa né le 10 juin 1889 à Nanaura (préfecture de Chiba) sous le nom de Kintarō Hayakawa et mort le 23 novembre 1973 à Tokyo, est un acteur, producteur de cinéma et réalisateur japonais. Fils d'un officier de la marine japonaise, il est voué dès son enfance à devenir officier de marine, mais il dut cesser ses études militaires à la suite d'un accident de plongée. Il quitta alors le Japon pour s'installer à Chicago, en 1911, pour y étudier l'économie. Il commença alors le théâtre, d'abord comme amateur, puis comme professionnel. Il fut remarqué par le cinéaste Thomas H. Ince alors qu'il interprétait avec Tsuru Aoki, qui allait devenir sa femme, une pièce appelée The Typhoon. Donc, en 1914, le couple débutait au cinéma à la Kay-Bee Domino, l'une des sociétés de production appartenant à Ince, et spécialisée dans les drames[1]. Il fut d'abord une vedette du cinéma muet, la première grande star d'origine asiatique de Hollywood, menant une vie aussi luxueuse que dissolue. Mais par la suite, victime du racisme anti-japonais, il est chassé des États-Unis. Il se rend alors en Europe, tourne en France avec Max Ophuls et Marcel L'Herbier, abuse de l'opium et du casino. En 2016, Gilles Jacob lui consacre un ouvrage intitulé Un Homme cruel. Il raconte sous la forme d'un roman comment Sessue Hayakawa fut une vedette du cinéma muet aussi célèbre que Chaplin, menant une vie erratique et retrouvant le succès planétaire avec Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï (film) en 1957, dans lequel il incarne l'odieux colonel Saïto, avant de rentrer au Japon et trouver la paix dans un monastère bouddhiste de Toyama, à 72 ans.
