Né le 19 décembre 1980 à Los Angeles, Jake Gyllenhaal grandit dans une famille profondément ancrée dans le cinéma : son père est réalisateur, sa mère scénariste, son parrain Paul Newman et sa marraine Jamie Lee Curtis. Il fait ses premiers pas devant la caméra à onze ans dans La Vie, l'amour, les vaches (1991), avant de s'imposer en 2001 avec Donnie Darko de Richard Kelly, où son interprétation d'un adolescent troublé le révèle à la critique. Le Jour d'après (2004) lui offre une large audience, mais c'est Le Secret de Brokeback Mountain d'Ang Lee (2005) qui marque un tournant : son rôle de Jack Twist lui vaut une nomination à l'Oscar du meilleur second rôle et une reconnaissance internationale durable. Il collabore ensuite avec David Fincher dans Zodiac (2007), puis enchaîne deux films avec Denis Villeneuve en 2013, Prisoners et Enemy, avant de livrer une performance saluée unanimement dans Night Call (2014) de Dan Gilroy. La décennie suivante confirme sa polyvalence, des Frères Sisters de Jacques Audiard (2018) à Spider-Man : Far From Home (2019) et Ambulance de Michael Bay (2022). Sa sœur Maggie est également actrice, et il est le parrain de Matilda Ledger.
