Violoniste formée au Conservatoire de Bruxelles puis auprès d’Eugène Ysaÿe — à qui elle prêta un Guarnerius de 1740 — Carry Mess épouse en 1895 le pianiste Théo Ysaÿe et est la mère du réalisateur Jean Daumery. Sous le nom de scène Carrie Daumery, elle débute au cinéma en France en 1908. Devenue veuve, elle s’installe à New York en 1919 et tourne jusqu’en 1929 une vingtaine de films muets, parmi lesquels Eugénie Grandet, Dorothy Vernon, L’Éventail de Lady Windermere et Le Père Goriot. Elle apparaît ensuite, de 1929 à 1937, dans une cinquantaine de films parlants américains, notamment Hearts in Exile, L’Athlète incomplet et Caravane.
