Fille d'un diplomate, Helen McCrory passe son enfance à voyager autour du monde. Sa mère est galloise et son père est écossais. Elle s'inscrit à l'âge de dix-sept ans en arts dramatiques à l'université des arts de Londres. Elle est sélectionnée en 2002 pour le London Evening Standard Award de la meilleure actrice pour son rôle d'Elena dans l’Oncle Vania de Tchekhov. Parallèlement à une carrière de comédienne de théâtre, elle joue dans des séries télévisées et des téléfilms, notamment dans Anna Karénine (2000), Carla (2003) et Charles II : The Power and The Passion (2003). Elle apparaît dans des films comme Entretien avec un vampire, La Vengeance de Monte-Cristo, ou encore The Queen, où elle interprète la femme de Tony Blair. En 2006, elle avait été pressentie pour jouer le rôle de Bellatrix Lestrange dans Harry Potter et l'Ordre du phénix, mais sa grossesse modifia ses plans. En 2009, elle fut choisie pour jouer Narcissa Malefoy dans les films de la saga Harry Potter. Elle est mariée à Damian Lewis depuis 2007. Ils ont deux enfants, une fille Manon, née en 2006 et un garçon Gulliver, né en 2007.
