Los Angeles pour poursuivre une carrière d'acteur, puis est apparu dans plusieurs séries télévisées au début des années 2000. En 2006, il a acquis une plus grande reconnaissance pour son rôle de super-héros titulaire du film de 2006 Superman Returns. Il a également eu un rôle récurrent dans la série télévisée Chuck, en tant que Daniel Shaw. Suite à cela, il a eu des rôles de soutien notables dans les films Zack et Miri Make a Porno et Scott Pilgrim vs the World. En 2010, il a incarné le protagoniste éponyme d'un autre film de bande dessinée, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. Il incarne actuellement un autre super-héros emblématique de DC, Ray Palmer / The Atom, dans la série télévisée de super-héros de CW Arrow et à venir Legends of Tomorrow.
