Né le 25 novembre 1936 à Washington D.C., Matt Clark grandit en Géorgie, fils d'un charpentier et d'une enseignante. Après deux ans dans l'armée, il étudie à l'Université George Washington avant d'abandonner pour enchaîner les petits métiers. C'est en rejoignant une troupe de théâtre amateur puis la compagnie Living Theatre de New York qu'il trouve sa voie, travaillant à Broadway et dans le théâtre communautaire à la fin des années 1950. Sa silhouette longiligne et son regard sombre en font une figure idéale du western. Dès la fin des années 1960, il enchaîne les seconds rôles dans des films de référence : Dans la chaleur de la nuit (1967), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), Pat Garrett et Billy le Kid (1973), Josey Wales hors-la-loi (1976) aux côtés de Clint Eastwood. Il tourne également avec John Wayne, Sam Peckinpah ou John Huston, s'imposant comme un visage familier du genre. À la télévision, il est notamment présent dans La Petite Maison dans la prairie. Au cinéma, il reste mémorable dans le rôle du barman de Retour vers le futur 3 (1990). Il signe également la réalisation de Da (1988) avec Martin Sheen. Matt Clark est décédé le 15 mars 2026 à Austin, au Texas. Il avait 89 ans.
